Paired Reading

On Thursday, 5 October 48 TY volunteers trained to become Paired Reading tutors here in Loreto. The volunteers learned how they can help younger students foster a love of reading by simply reading together for enjoyment. 19 of the volunteers have been selected to read with first years at lunchtimes from 1.45-2.05 p.m. Many of the other volunteers will put their training to good use outside of school. Hopefully the tutors will pass on their love of reading to the younger girls. Best of luck to all involved!

Senior Football

Match report of the senior A Leinster schools football match between Loreto and Portlaoise.

By Ciara Banville

The senior A football team played their first match against Portlaoise on Thursday, 12 October in Carlow.

Loreto started strongly with early points from Emma Codd and Rachel Bennett. Emma Codd soon found the net with a superb shot but the goal was later disallowed. Lettie Whelan and Emma Cousins were working hard in mid-field to stop the ball entering our defence. Portlaoise worked well but were unable to match the following three points from corner forward Rachel Bennett and a point each from Niamh Dunne and Emma Codd. Loreto finished the first half the better side, four points clear of Portlaoise on a scoreline of 0-07  to 0-03. Loreto continued their flying form from the beginning of the second half. Sarah Harding Kenny soon found the back of the Portlaoise net as the ball rebounded giving Loreto a comfortable advantage over their opponents. Emma Codd, Rachel Bennett and Niamh Dunne continued their scoring streak throughout the second half. Nearing the end of the second half Portlaoise came back strong but could only manage 0-04 as the Loreto back line put up a powerful display. The match finished 1-09 to 0-08, a well deserved win for the Loreto girls.

Loreto are up against Coláiste Íosagáin in the next round.
