New School
Our hopes of moving into the new school before Christmas suffered a setback last week when we were given a revised completion date of 15 January 2018. Whilst this came as a disappointment, it was offset by the tremendously positive reaction of staff to the new building when they had a walk through last Friday.
We will issue revised arrangements for this new date early in the New Year.

U16A Leinster football semi final against Loreto Navan – Report by Ciara Banville and Caitlin Nash (4th year)
The under 16 A footballers played their Leinster semi final on Tuesday, 5 December against a physical Loreto Navan.
Navan were first to score and kept attacking the Loreto Wexford backs scoring 1-5 before Loreto’s Mollie Bates finally got a score in the 8th minute. Liadh Dwyer also got a point, the only scores for the Wexford side in this half. This wasn’t the way for Navan however as they put pressure on Wexford’s full back line of Katie Kehoe, Alanna Fusciardi Wallace and Clare Barrett for the majority of the match. Loreto’s backs did their best trying to prevent Navan from widening the gap but they still managed to get 3-9 in the opening half. Wexford were trailing 3-9 to 0-2 at halftime.
Loreto Wexford got into the game in the 2nd half and Ella Wright scored a magnificent goal to raise Loreto’s heads. Substitute Tara Culliane was brilliant both defending and attacking, as well as Liadh Dwyer and Michelle Carty. Loreto Wexford never gave up and matched Navan’s skills in the 2nd half. Tara Cullinane drilled one last point over the bar for Wexford but, unfortunately, this is the end of the road for Loreto Wexford as the match ended 4-13 to 1-4.

2017 First Year Retreat – Report by Gia Simmons, Meitheal Leader for 1.5
On Friday, 20 October 2017, the 1.5 class, their four Meitheal Leaders, Ms. M. Jordan and Ms. L. Jordan travelled to Ballyvaloo Retreat centre for the highly anticipated class retreat. This is the first trip that you go on in Loreto at the beginning of 1st year. It helps the class to bond and learn more about each other.
We left Loreto at 8.50 am and made our way by bus to Ballyvaloo. Throughout the day the 1st years did many fun activities with both the teachers and with the Meitheal Leaders. These are some of the activities that they took part in on their day out.
They watched part of the Lego Movie, which taught them that they shouldn’t be afraid to be who they are. They learned about the history of Loreto and how our school came to be, they also learned the stories of Mary Ward and Teresa Ball. They took part in a meditation exercise. For many of them, this was the first time that they had tried meditation and they really enjoyed it. They talked about what the differences were between Primary school and Secondary school and discussed the support systems that they have in the school for any worries or problems that they may have in their time here. They learned about the Loreto values – Truth, Justice, Freedom, Sincerity and Joy. They filled in compliment sheets for each person in the class that they brought home with them. This is one of the most memorable things that happens on the retreat. Throughout the day the Meitheal Leaders took them for games and bonding activities. One of the highlights was when we played a game called the Skittles Game. This was where each girl took a Skittle sweet and the colour of the sweet corresponded with a question that they had to answer. They got to learn a lot more about each other and a lot about the Meitheal Leaders too. The Meitheal Leaders also took the 1st years on a walk to the beach, we played games and took their first photo as a class.
At the end of the day they had a small service in the chapel which the Meitheal Leaders helped them to organise. During this service they reflected on the lovey day that they had as a class.
Everyone involved had a fantastic day.
Transition Year Reports
Since the commencement of the school year our Transition Year students have been heavily involved in a wide variety of interesting and exciting trips, talks and events in school, within the community and further afield. Transition Year provides students an opportunity to develop and grow as people, harnessing skills that will stand to them through school and in within their bright futures. We hope to chart this year’s TY journey with updates on all that is going on, here on the website.
TY Carne Trip – By Chloe Quinn
On 6 September 4.1, 4.4 and 4.5 made their way down to Carne and stayed overnight. On 7 September 4.2 and 4.3 joined them for a day of activities which included yoga, rounders, a walk on the beach and team bonding exercises.
All classes made up a song so it could be the TY anthem. 4.3 won it with a brilliant version of “Freaks” by Timmy Trumpet.
4.1, 4.4 and 4.5 then made their way home after the activities while 4.2 and 4.3 stayed overnight. In the morning both classes went for a walk on the beach and when they got back they made their way to school.
Occupational Awareness Month
During the month of November TY students and teachers have organised guest speakers from various career backgrounds, from the surrounding locality and community to come in and speak to students. Guest speakers came in to talk to students from a variety of professions, with a different talk taking place every day. Speakers included a prison officer, a chef, a pharmacist, a social worker, a farmer, a dietician, a photographer and many more. This wide variety gave students ample exposure to a wide range of skillsets and daily routines. Many speakers offered advice, described their career journeys and detailed their training routes. This was the maiden voyage of such a unique idea started by TY teachers Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Zimmermann. From the success of all the talks there is no doubt the month will be concreted into the annual TY calendar.
Log-On Learning – By Charlotte Breen
Log-On Learning is a six week programme run by TY students for members of the community, often the elderly, who need help with their electronic devices like their mobile phone, tablets, laptops, etc.
This term’s Log-On Learning started on 7 November 7 and ran until 12 December. 16 members of the community have a one-to-one session with a TY student every Tuesday from 4:20 to 5:20pm. We help them with any issue that they have on their device. These issues can be anything from sending a text message, setting up voicemail, taking photographs, Skyping, booking a ticket, etc.
The TYs are really enjoying the chance to help the older generation. In turn, the older generation really seem to enjoy chatting and getting to know their TY ‘teacher’. We are very proud to run this valuable programme in our school, and we look forward to moving from our current home in the lunch room to our new school in the New Year.
