Junior and Leaving Certificate students

The school extends its very best wishes to 3rd and 6th year students who will be undertaking practical (Home Economics and Music) and oral (Irish, French, German, Japanese) examinations within the next fortnight.

This can be a stressful time for the students involved but we hope that, with support from both school and home, all students will perform to the best of their individual abilities.

French exchange

We welcome our French exchange visitors from Rennes Pacé this week.

Arriving on Sunday, the group will have a full programme of events for the week including school-based activities and trips to the Heritage Park, New Ross, Kilkenny, Glendalough and Dublin.

Our students and staff will make the return leg of the exchange in May.

The school is most appreciative of the work of organising teachers in both schools and of the generosity of host families.

Camogie match report

by Lettie Whelan (Transition Year student)

Loreto Wexford took on Castlecomer Community School in the second round of the U14 camogie championship on Monday, 13 March in Castlecomer. This was a must win game for Loreto in order to stay in contention.

Loreto started the brighter and Ciara Butler had 1-3 on the scoreboard for Loreto inside the opening ten minutes. Niamh Cullen caught a great ball in the twentieth minute turned and split the posts. Castlecomer opened their account with a point from their centre back from a 45 in the twenty fifth minute but Kate O’ Reilly widened the gap just before half time. The score at the break was 2-4 to 0-1.

Aoife O’ Connor, who had a super game, opened her personal tally with an excellent point after the restart. Castlecomer were not giving up however and began to battle back. Their centre forward scored 2-1 without reply to leave the score at 2-4 to 2-1 with twelve minutes remaining. Loreto had the final say, however, outscoring the hosts by 2-4 to 0-0 in that period.  Ciara Butler scored a spectacular goal from distance and added a further 2 points. Aoife O’Connor chipped in with two long-range efforts and Kate O’Reilly hit the net. The final score was 4-9 to 2-2.

Loreto are now back on track but must secure a win against St. Mary’s New Ross in their final outing.

The Loreto team on the day were:

Katie Feeney, Keeva Campbell, Amy Whelan, Danielle O’Leary, Becky Halligan, Aoife O’Connor (0-3), Laura Cash, Ciara Banville, Aoibhe Murphy, Aoibhinn Ferriter, Ciara Butler (2-5), Caoimhe Parker, Grace Roche, Niamh Cullen (0-1) and Sophie Dawson.

Kate O’Reilly (2-0) for Grace Roche.

U14 Football Blitz

by Lettie Whelan (Transition Year student)

Loreto Wexford’s U14 footballers had their first outing of the year when they took on other schools from County Wexford on Monday, 6 March in Ferns Centre of Excellence.

Loreto had 40 girls taking part with 2 teams.

Loreto ‘A’ team

The ‘A’ team had their first match against Gorey Community School. Loreto got off to a wonderful start and they led 2-2 to no score at half time thanks to scores from Sarah Carroll (0-1), Caoimhe Parker (0-1), Ciara Banville (1-0) and Rachel Power (1-0).

Gorey came out a different team in the second half and really upped the tempo. They outscored Loreto by 1-6 to 0-1 in the second half with Loreto’s point coming from substitute Clara Molloy. This game ended a draw at 2-3 to 1-6.

The ‘A’ team’s second match was against Coláiste Bríde of Enniscorthy. Loreto started well again and Rachel Power scored 3 points in the opening half but Coláiste Bríde replied with a goal and a point to take the lead heading into the break.

On the resumption, Grace Roche scored an excellent point but this was not enough for Loreto to see off Coláiste Bríde and they added a goal just at the end to win.

This meant that Loreto and Gorey were drawing on points so they had a shoot-out. This consisted of 5 players from each team trying to score a point from the 45-metre line. Aoife O’Connor, Grace Roche, Shauna Hackett, Sarah Carroll and Rachel Power all took frees for Loreto but, with a blustery wind blowing, none of the frees were converted so then it went to sudden death. Ciara Butler and Caoimhe Parker were next up for Loreto. None of the girls were able to convert so it was moved to the 14-yard line. Kate O’Reilly was next up for Loreto.  Kate O’Reilly’s shot dipped just below the cross bar. Then Molly Redican’s shot tipped the cross bar and went over. Loreto had won the shoot out and progressed to the final where Coláiste Bríde awaited.

Loreto got off to a brilliant start and Grace Roche pointed a free before Rachel Power scored a fantastic point to give Loreto a 2 point lead at the break.

Coláiste Bríde scored a goal on the resumption but Loreto battled back and Rachel Power finished to the next after great build up play. It looked like Loreto were going to hold out but Coláiste Bríde got a last gasp goal in the dying seconds to win the game by a single point.

The ‘A’ team were brilliant and should do well this year. The team members for the final were:

Kate O’Reilly, Maeve Buckley, Aoife O’Connor, Tara Cullinane, Ella Cullen, Ciara Butler, Molly Redican, Sarah Carroll, Shauna Hackett, Amber Wright, Sadhbh Neville, Grace Roche, Rachel Power, Ciara Banville, Caoimhe Parker.

Loreto ‘B’ Team

Loreto had their opening game against Creagh College of Gorey.

Loreto were much stronger and Hannah Cullen was super scoring 4-2 from 5-2. Roisin Waters added the other goal.

Loreto faced Presentation in their second match but Presentation were much the stronger team as they had their first team playing in the second division. The final score was 4-4 to 0-1. Sophie Bergin kicking a superb point from long range in the second half.
