Diverse Voices

An important job of the Inclusion Committee is to give everyone a voice. Sometimes we might unintentionally overlook the voices of those from a minority group and miss a valuable chance to learn more about our wonderfully diverse school community. In this regular feature, we hope to share the interesting stories of students from diverse backgrounds.

What I Like about School:

I like being with my friends. I like how a lot of subjects in TY teach you how to run a business as this is something I would like to do when I’m older. I would love to run my own tattoo parlour.

Inclusion Committee:

Since I was younger, I thought more communities should be included and recognised in schools. It doesn’t matter if someone is gay, trans, lesbian or if they are from a different ethnicity, culture or race. If they are not harming anyone then I don’t see why we shouldn’t include them as equals in school communities. By joining the Inclusion Committee, I can be part of a group that can change things for the better. The more members there are on the committee, the more likely it is that we can bring about change for the better.

Aspect of Inclusion:

I’m not necessarily more interested in one particular area.  I think when we say ‘inclusion’, that should mean everyone.

Stand Up Week, Monday 4th November to Friday 8th November 2024:

I think Stand Up Week is a good thing because not a lot of people fully understand LGBTQ+. The more information we give, the more people understand, and this means less discrimination and reminds people that we are all human. Last year, the Inclusion Committee put up labels of different sexualities and identities during Stand-Up Week. I saw my identity displayed, which is omnisexual. This means I love all genders but have a slight preference for one of them. I also identify as transgender. Seeing that label and explanation displayed made me feel happy and seen.

I’m excited about the Rainbow Bake Sale to raise money for Belong To which is taking place on Friday the 8th of November in school. I’m going to make my signature cookies. I made them for my granny’s birthday barbeque, and they were a big hit! I’m going to decorate them with different colours of icing to fit in with the rainbow theme. I’m not going to enter them in the ‘Spill the Tea’ Bake Off as I don’t enjoy competition, but I hope the students like them.

My Message for Stand-Up Week:

I’m a human, just as you are. Be kind.

Stand Up Week 2024

Well done to all entries in todays “Rainbow Bake Sale” in aid of BelongTo. Over 300 euro was raised so thank you to all who contributed. The winners of the bake sale were Pixie Lou Roche in 2.4 and Ashley Howlin in 4.2. This years message is to always “Stand up for your LGBTQ friends”
