New school

We are now just a matter of days away from the completion of our new school building. When a completion date is 100% confirmed a letter will be issued to all families setting out the details of the move.

New Child Protection Procedures

Your attention is drawn to the new tab on our website – Child Protection.

This contains both the details of the new procedures that commenced on 11 December 2017 and the school’s actions arising from same.

Any questions or comments in relation to these matters can be directed towards Mr. O’ Shea (Designated Liaison Person).

Fundraising Report – by Ella Wright (2nd Year)

Throughout the past eight months, I, a patient in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin have been fundraising for the hospital with a final total in December of €1,324.14. With lots of help from girls in 2.4, this figure was raised by holding cake sales, raffles, ice cream and craft fair sales.

A cheque for €824 was given to the nephrology department that specializes in care for children with kidney disease. €500 was used to purchase toys, art and crafts equipment. Along with donations by students, 100’s of toys were delivered to the hospital just in time for the children who spent Christmas in Crumlin. I would like to thank all of the students and staff for their continuous support.

Transition Year Updates

1. Sailing Team – by Sarah Jones

Recently Loreto Wexford has been represented in two events.

Three teams entered the interschools event at Sutton Dinghy Club. The first day of racing was cancelled because if the extreme weather. The following day was so calm that the racing had to be postponed for four hours. Despite doubt that the racing would go ahead the commodore made the decision to race. The race had to be shortened because of the lack of wind. Loreto had many different boats entered for the mixed fleet event, including Topper, Laser 4.7 and 420. There were trophies handed out for individual, mixed fleet and optimist racing. Two sailors, Rhianna Deas and captain Sarah Jones won best newcomers and came 6th in a fleet of forty-two. Loreto was extremely well-represented and received an invitation to next year’s event.

Sarah and Rhianna also entered the Inter-Loreto sailing competition in INSS sailing club, Dun Laoghaire. Both did exceedingly well, and Sarah came 3rd in the silver fleet.

2. Fota Wildlife Trip – by Ashling Alouf

We went on a TY trip to Fota Island in Cork in November. We left Loreto at 08.00 and took a bus to Cork.

When we arrived we had an ecology talk given by one of the members of staff on Irish wildlife. After that they showed us where they make the food for all the animals everyday. They also showed us inside the giraffe enclosure.  After lunch we had a guided tour of the Zoo and were told all about the animals that live there. Fota Island is a home to many endangered species such as the Sumatran Tiger and the Scimitar-horned oryx. We then got back on the bus and headed home to Wexford.

We had a lovely day out and are very grateful to the teachers who came with us.

3. Career Guidance Month – by Sarah Jones

The beginning of November saw the start of careers month. Students attended a talk from a person trained in a different career each day spanning two classes. This in turn gave students a chance to ask questions about their day to day job and how they became qualified and why they choose to continue that route.

There was huge appreciation for those people who came in to talk about their life, achievements and struggles. It gave students a clear understanding of their job and what subject choice they would have to make for each career. In total we had over twenty-five talks from trained professionals and they each had exciting life experiences to share with our students. Some of our talks included representatives from Button & Spoon, SK Fitness, Able Disable club, O’Shea and Bramley Vets, and the Talbot Hotel. Above is a picture of the pharmaceutical talk given by Leonie Grant, owner of Grants Pharmacy.
