Amber Flag Committee – report by Ms. Kelly (Guidance Counsellor)
The Cycle Against Suicide and Amber Flag Committee has been continuing its great work over the last two months.
In January, we worked on the theme of bullying. The committee members encouraged their class groups to start sitting beside new people in their classes in order to advocate students being more open and inclusive. We also did a poster campaign to highlight the issue.
In February, we are working on the theme of Social Media. We are running “The Granny Rule Campaign” where we are encouraging all students to question in advance what they post on social media. This basically states that if they wouldn’t want their Granny to see it, then it shouldn’t be posted. Students should always ask themselves three questions before posting:
“is this true?”, “is this kind?” and “is this necessary?”.
If the answer to any of these questions is “no”, then they shouldn’t post it. We have made a very nice display in the GP area to highlight this issue and teachers will be talking about it in their classes where appropriate.
We are still advocating that students start getting outside into the school grounds during lunchtimes for some exercise and fresh air. As such, the committee is running a “Walk and Talk Wednesday” every week and we would be delighted to see the numbers of students getting outside increasing week after week. It is not healthy, physically nor mentally, for students to spend so many hours inside every day. With the opening of the 18 acre Min Ryan Park right beside the school in the coming weeks it will be very easy to get out for an abundance of fresh air and exercise.
We ask that parents would please reiterate to their daughters all the above messages that we are working hard to deliver in school.
Football news
Congratulations to Ciara Banville who represented Leinster in the Post Primary Schools Inter Provincial Gaelic Football tournament in Kinnegad recently. Leinster won the shield for the second year in a row. Ciara is pictured here with the Leinster Ladies President, Dominic Leech.
Ski Trip
Ninety 2nd and 3rd year students and nine staff will head away in the very early hours of Monday morning next for a week long ski trip to Lavarone in Northern Italy. We hope that all involved will have a very safe and enjoyable trip.
We thank the tour organiser, Ms. Zimmermann, for her great work in organising this trip over the last 18 months.
Swimming news
The school congratulates Róisín Lawless on her recent swimming success. She earned a silver medal in the 100m and 200m backstroke at a recent event in the National Aquatic Centre. These stong performances have seen her earn qualification to the Group 1 swimming summer nationals to be held in Dublin this July
Mid-term break
We wish all members of the school community an enjoyable and restful mid-term break next week, particularly our 3rd and 6th year students who are presently finishing their mock examinations.
