Talks on Internet Safety

Speakers from Zeeko Education will address all 1st year students on issues associated with Internet Safety on Monday, 8 October. At 17.45 that evening they will make a similar presentation to all interested parents in the school’s General Purpose Area.

Peer talk on Internet Safety – report by Megan Suter (5th year student)

On Tuesday, 25 September, six 5th year students – Megan Suter, Krishna Ramesh, Emer O’Rourke, Etain Fanning-Ironside, Kayleigh Murphy and Mindulee Seneviratne – gave a talk to 2nd  year students on the importance of staying safe on social media and about issues regarding bullying in school and online.

We found our talk to be very productive as we split into smaller groups at different times throughout our talk to allow them to ask questions. They were very involved and asked many questions and to include a less formal discussion.

Before talking to the 2nd year students, we surveyed them anonymously about their phone usage, social media and bullying.

Some statistics we found out were:

  • 67% of the students surveyed had their phone in their bedroom at night.
  • 68% of students used snapchat the most out of any social media network.
  • When asked how long they spend online a day, 12% answered less than 1 hour, 36% said 1-2 hours, 33% answered 2-3 hours, 9% at 3-4 hours and 11% admitted to spending over 4 hours online a day.

We also surveyed them after the talk to see how many benefited from it. In this, we also asked if they had any additional comments to make. We found that 93% of the students felt they did benefit from it and learned something new that could help them.

Transition Year trip to Carne

All Transition Year students will participate in their start-of-year team building exercise when they visit Carne for an overnight stay and a range of activities from Wednesday evening, 10 October to Friday morning, 12 October. This event is now firmly-rooted on the school calendar as it proved to be very successful and enjoyable last year.

Board of Management

The next meeting of the Board of Management will be held in the school at 16.30 on Monday, 8 October.

Autumn meeting of parents

Parents are asked to pencil in the Autumn meeting of parents – Monday, 15 October from 17.30 to 18.45. Full details will be issued next week.
