Scholarship Award – report by Ms. Kinsella
Sincere congratulations are offered to Transition Year student, Róisín O Reilly, who has won the Irish-Austrian Scholarship for 2019. Róisín participated in a German essay competition writing on the topic of how we could live without plastic – Wie gestalten wir unser Leben ohne Plastik? Her scholarship comprises of a fortnight at the Collegium Austriacum in Salzburg this coming June and she will also be awarded the Perpetual Dubsky’s Environment Trophy. Róisin will be presented with her award by his Excellency, the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Helmut Freudenschuss at a ceremony to be held at his residence later this month. We offer Róisín our huge congratulations and wish her the very best in Salzburg. Herzlichen Glückwunsch Róisín.
Athletics Update – Ms. Mullen reports
Once again, Loreto Wexford was out in strong force for the South Leinster Schools Athletics in Waterford. Day 1 produced since fine performance from our athletes with Eimear Halpin (2nd year) getting a silver in the Junior Discus. Cliona Kearney in 1st year claimed a bronze medal in the Minor High Jump and 500m. Ruth Devereux in 2nd year was 3rd in the Junior Javelin. Roisin O’Reilly in 4th Year claimed a gold medal in the Inter Steeplechase. Flora Doran was very unlucky to finish 4th in the Junior 1500m.
Day 2 saw our seasoned athletes pick up a number of medals. Roisin O’Reilly was in action again and claimed a silver medal in the 1500m. Aisling Kelly (4th) completed the sprints double winning the Inter 100m and 200m in style. April Keeling (4th) won the Senior 100m also. Maeve Hayes (5th) won the Senior High Jump and was 2nd in the Long Jump. Danika Gilshinan (4th) was 3rd in the Inter 800m. Rachel Power (4th) won the Inter Javelin and was 3rd in the High Jump. Zara Power (6th) was 3rd in the Senior girls Hammer.

National Careers Skills Competition – Report by Ms. Kelly
On Wednesday, 8 May Emaan Sami Khan from 6th year was presented with her prize of a beautiful trophy and a gorgeous Go Pro camera at the Clock Tower, Department of Education, Marlborough Street, Dublin.
Emaan came first place at Leaving Cert. level in this national competition run by CareersPortal and McDonalds. Emaan wrote about the experience she gained during her TY work placement at an accountancy firm and about the transferable skills she developed during this period.
This competition encourages students to become aware of the skills needed in the workplace and beyond and to note that, although the qualifications needed to get into certain careers are important, they would mean little without the teamwork, interpersonal, analytical, critical/creative thinking, I. T, communication skills etc. These are what employers look for most at interviews.
We at Loreto, Wexford endeavour to facilitate our students in developing these skills. As Guidance Counsellors, Ms. Foley and I advocate strongly that all our students try to develop their independence and research skills to prepare them for life after Loreto and over the course of the three years of senior cycle we do our best to equip our students with these skills. It was therefore a huge privilege for me to witness Emaan receiving her prize on Wednesday as she has shown huge initiative, autonomy and independence by entering this competition and then, to top it all, to win first place and €1,000 for our school. Thank you so much Emaan!! Huge congratulations to you and your family. We are all very proud of you!!
Emaan met with Minister John Halligan, TD – Minister of State for Training and Skills who showed great interest in her project. Personel from CareersPortal commented that the personal reflection in Emaan’s project was outstanding! They especially liked the way she linked her desire to be an asset to the world with the financial/accountancy definition of what an asset is.
I have no doubt, Emaan, that you will continue to be a great asset to yourself, your family and your future career. With every best wish!
School News
Weather permitting, the annual Sports Afternoon will take place on Wednesday, 15 May from 13.25 onwards.
Transition Year students head to Glendalough for their annual hike and overnight stay on Thursday.
