Diverse Voices
An important job of the Inclusion Committee is to give everyone a voice. Sometimes we might unintentionally overlook the voices of those from a minority group and miss a valuable chance to learn more about our wonderfully diverse school community. In this new regular feature, we hope to share the interesting stories of students from diverse backgrounds.
As we begin our work for the year, we hear this month from second year student Avril Allwin.

Name: Avril Allwin
Age: 13
Class: 2.1
Country of birth: Kollam, Kerala, India
Parents Country of birth: Father- Maharashtra, India. Mother- Kerala, India

Tell us about your homeplace: I was born in Kerala but moved to Bahrain when I was three years old as my father got a job there. After we moved, my mother also got a job in Bahrain. When I was around 11 years old, we moved to Ireland because my mother secured a very good job here as a nurse in Wexford General Hospital. My mother came to Ireland around a year before the rest of the family. She needed to sort out accommodation for us before we arrived. We were very glad to be back together as a family when I came here in 2022.
My favourite memory:
I have many memories of India because we went on many vacations there while we lived in Bahrain. My favourite cousins live in Kerala, and I also have cousins that I visit in Maharashtra. Unfortunately, I have no relatives in Ireland. I do miss getting to visit relatives regularly. After Covid19 hit, we could no longer go to India, but we got to visit again last year, which was wonderful.
If you asked me what I missed most about India, I would say my cousins. I remember us climbing Jatayu hill together and taking in the fabulous views when we got to the top. We would stay with them in their houses, cycling and travelling around every day.
The climate in Kerala in June and July is cold and rainy, so very like Ireland! There are many hills, forests, greenery, and farm animals-many cows and stray dogs. Maharashtra is the opposite. There are a few trees but there is a lot of pollution- noise, air, water-any pollution you can think of! I think I may have got asthma there! Mumbai is the main city in Maharashtra. It is a very industrial city with lots of things to see, like monuments and museums. When we were on holidays in India, we visited the India Gate and the Victorian Memorial Taj mahal hotel BDL museum plaza Juhu beach which are very popular tourist sites.

Why I joined the Inclusion Committee:
I joined because I took part in Multicultural Week last year and I wanted to raise awareness about celebrating our differences. I really enjoy all the other events celebrated as part of the Inclusion Committee like Stand-Up Week and being part of the Schools of Sanctuary community. It feels nice to be included and I want to make sure everyone in school feels as included as I do.
Life at the moment:
It is very cold here, there aren’t many Indian restaurants, and I really miss my cousins, but I really like school life in Loreto. It is very different to schools in Bahrain and India. The teachers are extremely nice here. There are many optional subjects here to choose from which different from Indian schools There are many clubs in the schools such as Green School Committee, Inclusion Committee and etc. While I miss my family in India, I am very happy to be a student here in Loreto, Wexford.
