Glendalough Trip – report by Katie O’Connor, Annie Kelly, and Doireann Ní Mhaoláin (TY students)
The Loreto Transition Year classes recently visited Glendalough as part of their Gaisce award. On the 4th of October, they embarked on a challenging 25km hike. After arriving at their hostel, they began their treacherous journey without knowing what lay ahead.
On the first day of the hike, the students started their walk towards the mountain with a view of the lake. As they made their way to the mountain peak, the incline became steeper. Hunger started to gnaw at the students as they got closer to lunchtime, so they took a break halfway, near a waterfall.
After lunch, the students resumed their journey. They finally reached the peak of the mountain at 500 meters and stopped to take in the beautiful scenery and views. The students then started their descent, thinking they were at the end, but were shocked to find out that it wasn’t over, as their instructor, Fiona, had other plans.
As the students continued their walk, they believed they had completed their 15km, but they were mistaken as they had to keep pushing on for another 4km.
Six hours later, the students returned to the hostel. After an eventful night of cooking, playing games, running around, and bonding, the students got ready to leave the hostel for another exciting day around Glendalough. However, the rain arrived, which initially dampened the mood, but the views, the music, and the good vibes made it worthwhile. The students reached the end of the trail and paused at the lake to admire the V-shaped valley and take numerous pictures.
The students concluded their trip with a visit to the food vans before finally returning to the hostel to collect their bags and board their bus for the journey home.
