150th anniversary celebrations

Celebrations have started.

More than 400 people attended the Anniversary Concert in the National Opera House last Sunday night and were treated to twenty fantastic acts by Loreto students, both present and past, staff and a group of students from St. Peter’s College with whom the school has such a close musical association. We are thrilled that the concert raised €4,200 for Wexford Hospice Homecare.

This was followed on Monday by the telling of the Mary Ward and Teresa Ball stories to all students in the school. This was done by both 4th year students and Sr. Brigid Tunney. The presentations were of a very high standard and students were most attentive throughout all talks.

After three years of planning and writing, the 150th Anniversary book – “Lasting Values” – was launched in the Talbot Hotel on Tuesday by Brendan Howlin, T.D. The book is a permanent reminder of this significant time in our school’s history. It features many articles painting a picture of life in Loreto both in the past and in the present day. The book is now on sale in the school and in local bookshops for €20. This event also saw the unveiling of an incredibly beautiful and detailed Loreto Commemorative Cake, the work of teacher Trish Curran. What a shame to cut it!

A real sense of 1866 was created on Thursday when staff and students donned old style costumes and taught the curriculum of the day. The sense of the past was further created by two exhibitions in the foyer and outside the parlour.

The liturgical centrepiece takes place on Friday when the full school community, along with invited guests, attends Mass in Rowe Street celebrated by Bishop Denis Brennan and our chaplain, Fr. Jim Fegan.

Other news

Really outstanding Junior Certificate results were received by our students on Wednesday. Well done to them all and to their very proud parents, guardians and teachers.

School self-evaluation continues over the next week when students in the “Class of 2016”, parents of students in years 2 to 6 inclusive and the teaching staff are surveyed on a range of issues. The results of these surveys will be published over the coming weeks as the school progresses towards drawing up its Development Plan for the next four years.
