News round up

  • The Talbot Hotel was packed on Wednesday evening, 15 February when the 150 incoming 1st year students (September 2017) and their parents attended an Information Meeting. The attendance of nearly 450 was addressed by Mr. O’ Shea, Ms. O’ Reilly and the school’s two head girls, Niamh Buckley and Maria Cullen. The new students will be welcomed into the school itself on Wednesday, 31 May for a walkabout tour before commencing their Loreto education at the end of August.
  • All 5th year students get the opportunity to visit UCD on Friday, 17 February. This annual trip is organised by the school’s guidance counsellors, Ms. Foley and Ms. Kelly, and gives all students the opportunity to see what a university looks and feels like, albeit on a short visit.

Hockey in Loreto

The senior hockey teams went on their annual overnight Hockey Trip to Dublin on 13 and 14 January. They were scheduled to play Loreto Foxrock on the Friday afternoon and Loreto Dalkey on the Saturday morning.  Unfortunately this proved to be the coldest weekend of the winter and the matches on against both schools had to be cancelled due to frozen pitches.  With quick thinking, Ms. Kinsella rang the Leinster Rugby office to check if they had any tickets left for their fixture that evening in the Champions Cup against Mountpellier. Luckily there were!  The teams did a detour via Dundrum to purchase a few extra layers to put on before heading to what was a fantastic match which saw Leinster win 57-3.  We then stayed the night in the Green Isle Hotel and completed our trip the next day with a walk around UCD’s sports facilities.  Although we didn’t get a chance to play our matches, it was a thoroughly enjoyable bonding experience!

All teams are continuing to finish out their league matches at the moment.  The Inter A team have to play Loreto Kilkenny to decide who wins their side of the group with Kilkenny College on the same points.  The Senior A team finished their season losing to Kilkenny College in a well fought semi-final which saw the best hockey produced from both teams.  The Junior B team have still to play Loreto Kilkenny and Newtown in the league and have drawn Loreto Kilkenny in the cup also.  The Minor team have unfortunately lost to Kilkenny College and St. Leo’s and will face he Abbey School in the cup after midterm.  We have two 1st year teams this year who have been training diligently throughout the year with the help of some TY’s on a Monday after school.  They have both completed their first league matches against Kilkenny College and will play their remaining fixtures after midterm.

Cross Country

We had a large group of 18 students who took part in the South Leinster Schools cross country in Stradbally, Co. Laois on 1 February.  The track was located on the site of Electric Picnic and proved to have some very challenging elements for all involved.  Ciara Butler in 1st year qualified in 13th position and our junior team came 2nd overall with great performances from Danika Gilshinan 7th, Roisin O’Reilly 8th, Aoife O’Connor, and with Shauna Cullen, Emily Donoghue and Grace Roche adding to the scores.  They will now go forward to compete in the Leinster cross country in Santry on 15 February.
