Foyle Young Poets of the Year Awards 2020
4th year student Sinéad O’Reilly has been establishing herself on the poetry scene. Last week she was honoured as a commended poet in the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award.
The competition, for poets between the ages of 11 and 17, is the largest of its kind in the world. It acts as a springboard and has helped launch the careers of well-loved poets such as Caroline Bird and Helen Mort.
This year they received a staggering 15,966 entries. Judges Maura Dooley and Keith Jarret whittled this down to 100 poems, 15 winners and 85 commended, all of which will be published in an online anthology as well as on the Poetry Society’s YouTube channel.
Although, due to covid restrictions, the awards ceremony was unable to go ahead in London, the whole TY year group celebrated by watching the online ceremony with Sinead in school.
Well done Sinead! We, in Loreto, are very proud of you! Below is Sinead’s award-wining poem:
Ode to the Milkman
By Sinéad O’ Reilly
Unseen, your footfalls float like early dew,
A tipping fulcrum, captain dawn to shore,
The keeper of one hundred blinking moons,
Deposited like lanterns at each door.
You’re silent as a backdrop to a dream,
As wheel spokes glint, unroll Hemera’s cloak,
Your eyes alone behold her naked gleam,
Your hand unlocks the caged-in glassy notes.
With hearth-sparks, beating palm, you lace the cold.
The cornerstone of morning, time endured,
A memory, a silence not untold,
For countless sleeping ears are reassured.
At sunrise picture bottles smashed in flight,
As day spills round your feet; a pool of light.
Annual Report from the Board of Management
The Board of Management has prepared its Annual Report for 2019/2020 that may be viewed by clicking here.
We would normally hold a meeting of parents to talk through this report but, sadly, that cannot happen this year. Accordingly, please feel free to look through the powerpoint presentation and to contact Mr. O’ Shea – principal@loretowexford.com – should you have any enquiry or comment.

Mid-term break
We are delighted to have completed 8 weeks in school since re-opening at the end of August. Thankfully, all has gone well and we have settled into a new routine that has enabled good quality teaching, learning and caring to occur.
We wish all members of our school community a very enjoyable and safe mid-term break.
