National Public Speaking Champion – Eve Donohoe

On Saturday, 19 February, Eve Donohoe from 4th year won the National final of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition in Drogheda. This is the first time in history that anyone from Wexford has ever won the title. The competition is organised annually by Soroptimist Ireland, a group dedicated to establishing equality, peace and international goodwill for women. After winning both the local and regional finals, Eve qualified for the National Final.

There were 2 different aspects to this competition. Firstly, all speakers prepared a speech for up to 6 minutes on a variety of topics, ranging from the environment to social inequality. Eve spoke on the topic of partnership and empowerment of women, a topic which was based on the quote, “No nation can ever flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half its citizens”.

Following this, all speakers were given two minutes to prepare a speech on an unknown word. Nerve wracking stuff, but a walk in the park for Eve who just last year won the All-Ireland final in Irish debating.

Eve says she was honoured to claim the national title and is always proud to represent Loreto Wexford. Mr. Cornejo, in particular, has been very influential in Eve’s achievements and she considers herself very lucky to have such wonderful teachers to encourage her on her journey through Loreto.

Eve was presented with the stunning Mildred O Brien Perpetual Trophy and an Apple iPad for her incredible achievement.

Best wishes to all students and staff who will be participating in next week’s events.

Collection in support of Ukraine

Loreto, Wexford seeks to support the people of Ukraine in a meaningful way at this terrible time in their history.

A collection will be held in the GP Area from 07.45 to 08.45 on Friday, 4 March.

Donations can also be made via the school’s EasyPayments facility on www.loretowexford.com by 08.45 on Friday, 4 March.

All proceeds will then be donated immediately to the Irish Red Cross.

Red Cross teams are on the ground now in Ukraine and will continue their work to repair vital infrastructure, support health facilities, and help families with life-saving food and hygiene items.

Your support is desperately needed by the Ukrainian people. Please be as generous as you can be.

This is our school’s way of saying: We care – ми піклуємося

Other school news

Parent-teacher meetings have been completed in respect of all year groups. One meeting was held in person, the others had to be held online. The school expects that all future meetings will be held in person in the school.

Our Spring General Meeting of Parents will be held in the school on Monday, 21 March from 18.00 to 19.15.  Full details of the agenda will be provided in the coming fortnight.

It is wonderful to be able to report that all school events and activities are now back to normal after the challenges posed by Covid since March 2020.
