Loreto’s under 16 football success continued on Friday last as the ‘B’ team reached their first ever Leinster final with a 17 point victory over Tullamore in Carlow Hurling Grounds. Not to be outdone by the ‘A’ team’s recent success in capturing the Junior B title, the girls left no stone unturned as they played some fantastic football, especially in the first half. Aided by a strong wind the clear tactic was to get the ball into the danger area. With forwards Niamh O’Connor and Emma Berry sharing 4 goals between them and the running power of county u-16 duo Ciara Banville and Michelle Carty in midfield, the Offaly outfit couldn’t handle the work rate of the Loreto players. Whenever Tullamore did break, they did so with great intent, but with Shelmaliers Finola Monahan able to match anything thrown at her in the goal, the Spawell Road outfit went in at the break leading 6-04 to 0-0.
The second half saw Tullamore come storming out of the blocks and saw 3 points go unanswered within minutes. Finola was called upon twice as well to keep hold of Loreto’s strong lead. Wexford did get a break away and Emma Berry, having already hit the post and cross bar, completed her hat trick with a cool finish into the corner. Tullamore did come back again and got the goal that their second half display deserved. The teams traded scores in the dying minutes as Loreto went on to win by a scoreline of 8-06 to 1-07. A Leinster final Sacred Heart Secondary School, Drogheda waits for the girls and their management team.

Change for Charity – Carla Fusciardi Wallace (4.1)
Fourth year is a time when students are encouraged to get involved with as many things as possible, help others and experience new things. With this in mind, fourteen transition year students decided in November to begin fundraising on behalf of Change for Charity – an organisation run by the Central Bank of Ireland, involving the ‘rounding’ of prices to the nearest five cent, eliminating one and two cent coins. The objective was to raise money by collecting as many of these coins as possible.
The charities involved are The Irish Heart Foundation, Irish Autism Action, St. Francis Hospice, Harold’s Cross and Blackrock Hospices and Gaisce. All proceeds will be divided equally among these as well as other amounts going to community projects and youth groups.
We started by collecting coins in the school foyer from both students and teachers. Each girl involved then distributed collection boxes to various businesses in Wexford which were collected in December. All of our proceeds have been collected by Change for Charity and will go to those who need it most. Putting effort into charitable causes and working towards a larger goal is an incredible experience for us as teenagers and we are grateful for the opportunity to be involved with Change for Charity.
We would like to thank Mr O’Shea, Betty and the TY coordinators, especially Ms. Zimmermann, for helping us to achieve and experience this project.
The students involved were Emily Brazzill, Siadhbh Sheil, Caoimhe Neville, Olivia Middleton, Triona Daly, Rachel McDarby, Alannah Corcoran, Clodadh Dee, Eimear Fahy, Holly Rossiter, Faith Dempsey, Kate Furlong, Aoife Dwyer and Carla Fusciardi Wallace.

Holly Rossiter, Carla Fusciardi Wallace and Alannah Corcoran report on” Jersey Boys – The Musical”
Transition Years in Loreto had a most enjoyable outing to the Bord Gáis Theatre on Wednesday, 20 January to see the “extremely groovy” musical “Jersey Boys”.
We decided to summarise our experience using one of its most well-known songs “Oh What A Night”:
Oh what a night
Late January, 2000 and 16
What a very special time for me
As I remember, what a night
Oh what a night
You know I didn’t even know the show
But I just could not wait for us to go
What a trip, oh what a night
Oh I
Got a funny feeling when we walked to our seats
So high
I could see the Bord Gáis stage right in front of me
Oh what a night
Singing, laughing, having lots of fun
Ms. Byrne dancing in front of everyone
Busting moves, oh what a sight
We felt a rush like a rolling ball of thunder
Spinning our heads round and taking our bodies over
Oh what a night
Oh I
I loved the music of The Four Seasons
You know why?
I’d tell you but there’s just too many reasons!
Oh what a night
Why’d it take so long to see the light?
The show was great, everything seemed so right
Jersey Boys,
Oh what a night!

Art Personal Expression – Aoife Carthy (5.1)
For the first term of 5th year Art class, we were presented by Ms. Byrne with an assignment of personal expression. We had the freedom to do whatever we wanted to. We could use an unlimited amount of materials and create something of any size we wished. The projects display different aspects of our personality and represents topics and issues we are passionate about. Each piece of artwork shows the individuality and uniqueness of each of the girls in our 5th year art class.
We were delighted to display our work in the foyer last week.
