Justice and Peace – Help the Homeless Week – report by Ellen Lambert and Emma Kelly (4th Year Students)
This week, the Justice and Peace Group held ‘Help the Homeless Week’. This was a week when we raised awareness and funds surrounding the growing problem that is homelessness with our teacher Mr. Gunning. We decided it would make a greater impact on the school community if we displayed in our foyer a typical setting of what a homeless person has to deal with. The display consisted of cardboard boxes, bins and more. We saw throughout the week that a lot of students were stopping and acknowledging it, which gave us great appreciation for the interest in the event. We also collected money every morning in the foyer, which we donated to the Simon Community. This charity helps the homeless by housing them in emergency accommodation. Finally, we scattered some facts around the school to really highlight the statistics regarding homelessness – such as in Dublin 109 families became newly homeless in January 2018 and 430 women and children were turned away from Wexford’s Women Refuge.
Japanese Speech Contest
The 16th Japanese Speech Contest in Ireland was held in Trinity College on Saturday, 10 March last. Loreto, Wexford was represented in this competition by three students who all did very well on the day – Victoria Hawkins, Rebecca Jones and Tiana Smith. The Japanese Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Mrs. Mari Miyoshi was the chief judge, assisted, among others, by our own teacher, Ms. Ursula Zimmermann.
We congratulate the students on their performance and thank our Japanese teacher, Ms. Mika McDonnell, for her promotion of this competition in the school.
