Special Olympics success

The school is very pleased to congratulate 4th year student Bridget Cowman on her recent success at the Special Olympics. Bridget won no fewer than five medals for the hoop, ribbon, rope and club events and best overall competitor.

Special thanks are extended to her colleagues in 4th year who gave her so much encouragement and help in training – Ceris Browne, Chloe Bradley and Emily McMillan.

5th Year Art Projects

By Alannah Corcoran

Fifth Year students really get to showcase their talent this week, as artwork they have worked incredibly hard on is displayed in the foyer.

After being given three themes to chose from; Metamorphis, Mechanics and Worship, it is extremely rewarding to see how each student interpreted their chosen theme so differently.  Based on the new Leaving Cert Art Course, students were each given an A3 sketchbook to come up with and create their drawings and ideas – resulting in 2D and 3D pieces of work.  Unable to use pictures from the internet, students had to use primary sources for inspiration as well as delving into their own imagination.  Feel free to flick through the sketchbooks to see how each of use developed out ideas!

Also on display are some paintings and designs in conjunction with our study of Ancient Irish Art.  For example, The Tara Brooch and The Ardagh Chalice can be seen in both 2D and 3D formats. From cavemen to faces of the earth, I think we can all agree that the artwork on show is extremely interesting to observe and admire.  We really enjoyed expressing our individuality and creativity during this project – something that is vital for Leaving Cert Art.

School trips

We are delighted to report that 95 Transition Year students and nine teachers returned safely from their tour to Italy over the Easter.  All reports on the tour are very positive and the students have been complimented by staff on the excellence of their behaviour over the four days.

We extend our best wishes to the 28 students and two teachers who travel on the outward leg of the French exchange programme this weekend for a full week. Special thanks are due to the organising French teachers in both Loreto and Rennes-Pacé.
